Overview

Achilles is a coordinated set of five mobiles created for a two story atrium space in the new Spine and Joint Center. 8’ H x 8’W x 40’ D, clear aluminum, stainless steel, cast acrylic prisms.

Goals

The Spine and Joint Center was commissioning a number of wall oriented artworks in the public spaces of the hospital. The commissioned work by be would be in close proximity to some very colorful paintings so we made the intentional decision to create the suspended art in classic monochrome clear aluminum.

Process

The Contemporary Dayton acted as the commissioning agent and Dr. Robert Brandt was the primary benefactor and provided aesthetic inspiration for the project. We also worked with the architects and construction managers on site during construction. A special special connected was created to fit in the linear mechanical vents to support the lightweight mobiles.

Additional Information

This set of mobiles celebrates the idea of joints and movement in gently flowing forms. Air moment causes individual elements to move and force connected adjoining elements to move. The overall sculptures rotate 360 degrees.
