Overview
By Belltown is a community inspired mural project to celebrate the past, present, and future of Belltown — in Seattle WA.
Each of the 4 distinct murals features site-specific historic imagery accentuated by statements from Belltown community members — to continue ongoing grassroots advocacy for neighborhood improvements at/around the Belltown Battery Portal Site.
Goals
Aaron Asis developed this series of community murals to encourage us all to appreciate our past and to work towards a shared vision for the future.
“…There is great wisdom in these historic images of the past and there is even greater wisdom in these neighborhood voices of the present…but it’s only when we combine the two that we can start to see a more inspired vision for the future…”
The finished murals consisted of over 500 feet of printed imagery, pasted on to the surfaces of historic structures throughout the neighborhood to transform the streets into a gallery showing images of our past and words from the community — to celebrate Belltown
Process
By Belltown was developed in partnership with Belltown United and the Downtown Seattle Association / Metropolitan Improvement District — with image support from the Seattle Municipal Archives, University of Washington Special Collections Library, Washington State Office of the Secretary of State Division of Archives and Records Management, video support from Harley Pan & Green Ghost Studios, and project support from Darren Edwards & Jennie
