Overview

DEEP WEB is a monumental immersive audiovisual installation and live performance created by light artist Christopher Bauder and composer and musician Robert Henke. Presented in enormous pitch-dark indoor spaces, DEEP WEB plunges the audience into a ballet of iridescent kinetic light and surround sound bringing to life a luminous analogy to the nodes and connections of digital networks.
The work has been presented in 2016 at CTM Festival Berlin and at the Festival of Lights Lyon.

Goals

DEEP WEB was originally commissioned by the Festival of Lights Lyon, the world’s principal event for creative light displays, showcasing the work of top artists and offering a laboratory for up-and-coming talents.
DEEP WEB combines decades of separate research and experimentation by two artists with unique visions and passions for sound and light creating one epic work pushing the boundaries of the possible and imaginable.
The work was created by the inspiring coexistence with the given venues each quite different in appearance, i.e. the spectacular industrial architecture of the Kraftwerk Berlin contrasting with its roughness and the space of L'hôtel de Région designed by Christian de Portzamparc creating a dazzling light dance within a contemporary architecture.
DEEP WEB created a place as art, rather than a place with art. A place where people meet and connect, sharing most memorable moments at the horizon of art, design and technology.

Process

The artistic and aesthetic fascinating outcome of DEEP WEB was possible by pushing the technical and technological capabilities to the limit. The precision and synchronization of the lasers, the kinetic movement and sound on that scale was a result of a close cooperation between specialists in each field.

WHITEvoid in collaboration with KINETIC LIGHTS provided the unique high precision motor winch systems with real time feedback and the main control software.
High-end laser system manufacturer LaserAnimation Sollinger provided the technical expertise and development for the very specific spatial laser setup.
Robert Henke choreographed and synchronized an original multi-channel musical score to the spheres illuminated by blasts of colorful laser beams.
This novel combination of computer controlled kinetic elements and laser systems allowed for setting animated end points to normally infinite laser beams resulting in three-dimensional sculptural light drawings and arrangements in cavernous darkness and surrounding sound.

Additional Information

The echo to the two DEEP WEB exhibitions is still vibrant, videos and pictures spreading through the net and continuing inquiries are motivating to push the intention to realize further appearances around the world.
