Location: Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital, Los Angeles CA
This piece is composed of thousands of painted, bent metal panels. When seen up close, the small colorful panels may be read as individual brushstrokes, while from afar the piece is seen as a mosaic-like composition. This large scale artwork frames the major east entrance to the newly expanded Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital in South Central Los Angeles

Goals

This installation was designed to successfully transform the streetscape understanding while providing a unique and efficient user experience.

Process

For this piece, I had the opportunity to work closely with the local community, including the project meeting with the hospital staff and design workshops with the local Willowbrook Boys and Girls Club. The narrative of this work was inspired from the diverse residents and organizations that formed this community. The dappled composition represents the many people, doctors and staff that work together as a team to help serve their community. These engagement sessions brought dimension to the work that could not be achieved in isolation and has had a lasting influenced my design process.
