Overview
The monumental public sculpture “Ever Green” represents the acres of oak groves in Oakland’s past and the city’s namesake. It honors the native land it is grounded in, as well as the many attributes of the oak tree, and its parallels with the city of Oakland. The sculpture rises as an emblem of strength, endurance, survival, and as a witness to history. Along with its natural counterpart it offers shelter and protection, symbolizing knowledge and wisdom.
The green glass panels in the canopy lend their colors to the pavement during the day and are lit all through the night, while their tessellated mirror-finish surfaces reflect the surrounding buildings and bring the sky closer to the ground. The sculpture, with its multiple canopies, metaphorically brings together the many diverse communities that claim Oakland as home.
Goals
Carmel Partners engaged the services of Artsource Consulting to conduct a search of Oakland based artists for their percent-for-art requirement.
