Overview

This 3'H x 12'W x 3"D wall sculpture was commissioned for a new, $75 million, state of the art health care facility in Madison, Wisconsin. Consisting of stained glass and acrylic resin, the piece has a controlled, organic perimeter that catches the natural light sweeping through the grand corridor in which it hangs.

Goals

Art Expressions curated this entire 5 story building with some 400+ works of art, but was looking to commission a special lobby piece to beautify the space and echo the building's architectural features. The layered vertical design was selected to correspond with the mill work and metal glazings throughout the lobby's lengthy corridor. Of great concern was the color palette, which was carefully chosen to coordinate with the lobby's neutral elements, such as the terrazzo floor and stone tiles, with splashes of jade to unite with the spectacular patina wall.

Process

Art Expressions reached out and commissioned this design based on past works from my portfolio, but requested that the piece have an organic, irregular border. As the piece is made predominantly of glass, a unique, layered wooden canvas was designed to support the strips of glass that run off the main canvas. Once the design was finalized and agreed upon, the piece immediately went into production to meet a tight time frame, and 6 weeks later was shipped out for installation.
