Overview
ION City was custom designed by architecture and design studio, Minarc. The infinity hallways connecting guest quarters mimic hot lava floes zigzagging across a vast blackened field.
Goals
Erla Dögg Injgaidsdottir, designer, and Tryggvi Thorsteinsson, architect, wanted to bring nature to the city and throughout the hotel with Minarc's natural design materials and color schemes. Guests can experience and appreciate the austere Icelandic nature without getting out of the city. The infinity hallways are meant to represent Iceland's hot lava flows.
Process
Collaboration of landscape art and architecture which are all integrated in one which was the essential key to merge concepts and ideas.
Additional Information
The hallways create an endless view with dark mirror at end. Lights are controlled by movement and come on when you enter and give you the sense of magic. Lights and room numbers give you a sense of optical illusion as visual sense differs. Room numbers closest to lift are larger than the ones on bedrooms down the hallway.
