Overview

LIMINAL consists of two colorful, laminated, glass walls in the MSP International Airport. Each wall is installed along a corridor, where it functions as a divider, separating the corridor and the restrooms. As each wall can be viewed from both the interior and exterior of the restroom. Design: Minnesota’s luscious and mesmerizing landscape inspires the mind to reveal what is contained under the subsoil, the passage of time in layers unseen to the eye. These deep sediments, the space, a build-up over years of evolution, and nature’s forces working upon matter display a colorful fabric, a space that holds us. Awareness comes from the relationship an individual establishes with themselves, the environment, and one another. In this piece, Time is not just perceived as cyclical, it is also represented as an itinerary, a route, a line that defines migratory routes, as nodes connecting the transitions, progressions, the liminal places in between evolution. The compositions stem from its topography, geological data, the natural surroundings, lines depict the possible aerial routes.

Goals

The Goal of this artwork was to create a vibrant separation between two restrooms and a quartz rotunda inside the airport. In the approach of the design, many aspects of the location were carefully conceived, not only accounting for the conceptual choice of imagery but also looking at practical aspects such as transparency, and privacy, given that the artwork is placed near the restrooms.

As a result, an inviting and mesmerizing environment was created in which travelers can find themselves a dreamlike pause in the hustle and bustle of the airport as a transportation hub. The vignettes that are printed in the glass give very detailed information for the visitors to explore.

Process

This work was fabricated by the well known German Mayer of Munich. 
The technique combines hand applied techniques with digital printing. A base layer of heat-strengthened float glass is prepared. Artist and fabricator apply ceramic coloration by brushing, airbrushing or digital screen application. The coloration (assuming ceramic-based coloration only; see above) layers are then fused to the base glass at 1,150 degrees F. The colored glass panels are then fused together, colored side in...with the laminating film. Lamination is done at a lower temperature. Then the panel edges are ground and polished.

MONIKA BRAVO
 I am a multi-disciplinary artist born in Bogotá, Colombia. I studied fashion design in Rome & Paris and photography in London and NYC. I moved to Miami Beach, in 2020. I embody my own perspective and no longer seek “truth”; my vision is a synthesis of all disciplines, guiding me to manifest a reality that matches my desire to evolve. I create mesmerizing environments for public spaces, intimate interpersonal interactions through astrological readings, and meaningful spaces for individual and communal development through talks and workshops. I enjoy directing and producing diverse projects, from complex multi-media installations and public art commissions to artists’ books, textile design, and community workshops – thus, I see no boundaries between the applied and fine arts. I thrive in situations where I am working with limitations and constraints, creating opportunities for innovative projects that serve communities for years to come. I enjoy challenging myself with new technologies and materials, discovering new ways of manifesting my ideas to fit the needs of the location.
