Overview
Made of waterjet-cut ceramic pieces for a Muslim education centre. Measuring 4x 9 meters, it is one of the largest Islamic geometric compositions in the world. Using a 14th century composition from a madrasa in Morocco, I scaled it up and used colour and matt tile finish to give it a more contemporary look.Goals
My aim was to create a composition that would appeal equally to younger and older generations (and it has proven to have achieved this).
Process
The project was funded by community donations so many people had a personal interest in what was produced. It took over a year of figuring the design, manufacturing and installation process before we committed to turning on the waterjet cutter. The process we developed was innovative and new.
