Overview
“Oceans” is a kinetic sculpture that embodies the dynamism of the world’s oceans within the arid landscape of Las Vegas. Crafted from 483 motorized elements known as “Brixels,” this piece mimics the movement of the sea’s surface. The sculpture is alive with the pulse of the planet’s waters, each motion informed by real-time oceanographic data sourced from over a hundred coastal cities globally. In a rhythmic cycle, “Oceans” undergoes a metamorphosis every few minutes, transitioning its undulating patterns to represent the aquatic conditions of a newly featured city.
As viewers approach and raise their hand, the sculpture responds, integrating their impression into the aquatic tableau. In this exchange, the observer becomes a co-creator, their presence impeding the “Oceans,” blurring the lines between art, technology, and the environment.
Goals
The artwork was inspired by the famous Art Deco-designed Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami. Beyond the concept of bringing water to the desert, the physical form and materials also drew inspiration from the iconic building, incorporating elements such as marble, gold, and rounded arch shapes into the design.
