Overview

68′ x  9′ Manipulated Data, Archival Inks printed on Vibrachrome, and an Augmented Reality installation Pulse is a captivating art installation that seamlessly blends scientific research, molecular diagrams, and the colors of nature during seasonal transitions. The artwork strives to achieve a balance between motion and tranquility, artfully manifested in diagrams that reflect the velocity of heartbeats. These diagrams, which represent the number of heartbeats per minute, are woven into six different artworks that offer unique experiences based on the rhythm of the viewer’s walk. Pulse aims to approach transcendence while providing a temporary respite for the busy minds of BIDMC visitors and staff. The installation is a true feast for the senses, with Augmented Reality (AR) technology used to enhance the experience even further. By activating QR codes installed on both sides of the SkyBridge, viewers can unlock augmented objects that reflect tissue specimens from actual labs.

Goals

Pulse has a clear and noble objective: to alleviate anxiety and health concerns that visitors and staff at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) may be experiencing. The installation achieves this by creating a temporary respite for the mind through its vibrant artworks and AR technology. The colorful visuals offer a moment of relaxation, allowing individuals to briefly detach from their worries. Additionally, the installation highlights the exceptional accomplishments of medical research archived at the Harvard-affiliated Medical center in Boston, providing an extra source of inspiration and hope.

Process

The process behind the creation of Pulse was a year-long collaboration that involved working closely with Boston Art, BIDMC board members, and representatives. Together, we shared ideas and expertise to ensure that the project reached its highest potential. As part of this process, I worked closely with BIDMC labs of Cardiology, Neurology, Immunotherapy, Pathology, and the Institute for RNA Medicine. Through this collaboration, I gained a deeper understanding of their recent achievements, which were then incorporated into the AR component of the installation. This allowed me to showcase the remarkable advancements in medical research and inspire visitors and staff at the medical center.

Additional Information

The goal of BIMDC researchers is to use the finest and latest technologies to find new cures for various conditions. The AR experiments are accompanied by recordings of scientific discoveries made by BIMDC researchers, who specialize in Cardiology, Neurology, Immunotherapy, Pathology, and the Institute for RNA Medicine. The entire SkyBridge is a canvas for the AR installation, making it visible from every angle. This innovative and immersive installation is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who experience it.
