Overview
Radiance is a 20ft diameter, suspended mandala-like form composed of numerous dichroic acrylic shapes that are drawn from traditional patterns related to the various ethnic groups that have contributed to the rich and diverse cultural heritage of El Paso. Light entering from an oculus above and glass curtain wall create vibrant patterns of reflected and transmitted color on the building’s interior surface.
Goals
The goal for integrating the commission artwork was to create a completely cohesive experience through building materials, colors and natural light. Because the artwork materials are so ethereal and throw vibrant reflections around the space, it was critical to have minimize any distractions.
Process
Working with the architects of the new CONRAC facility, DWA Architects, our team was able to coordinate several aspects of integration in the building. The creation of an oculus above the artwork was added to provided funneled natural light to shine down through the art, and the materials utilized remained neutral to support the vibrant color palette of the dichroic acrylic. The terrazzo artist, Mitsu Overstreet collaborated with us to create a swirling composition of words that aligned with the center of the mandala.
