Overview

12′ X 7′ sliding Marquetry door for the Usona Clinic in Madison, WI, This research clinic treats people with PTSD and severe depression with psilocybin.

Our design reflects the clinic’s mission of treating patients with PTSD and severe depression. The metaphor of a transition from “darkness to light” is represented by the winds of change carrying dying leaves which are transformed into a golden peaceful state of being by the flying doves, traditional agents of peace. In addition, the buried roots of the trees symbolize deeply entrenched emotional burdens likewise transformed to a new life depicted by the sprouting acorn on the far right.

Goals

The committee overseeing the design and construction of the clinic favored artwork that would instill a sense of calm throughout the building, while also being uplifting. The warmth of wood veneer was a perfect compliment to the woods used throughout the building, while offering a wide palette of colors and textures. Our decision was to use subject matter that reflected things found in nature, while telling the story of healing and hopefulness. This movable door is located between the dining room and the kitchen, visible to all using this area.

Process

The collaboration process that we experienced was quite easy and exciting. We worked closely with the lead architect, the construction firm, the millwork firm, and members of the Board of Usona Institute. We presented a total of 6 concepts, which were very well received. The team was unanimous in their choice for the design. They had great questions regarding our process, and were open to suggestions we made that would make the installation process a simple one. The team also asked us to "tone down" some of the bright colors we had planned to use, so we replaced some of the dyed veneers with natural veneers.

The company making all of the interior doors for the building created the 4 door panels which we would then apply the marquetries to. These were shipped to us in a crate we designed for them to specifically protect and separate each door when we shipped the completed artwork back for assembly on site. Everything arrived in perfect condition to be assembled and finish applied.

Additional Information

Creating art, for us, is two-fold: It fulfills our own personal expression, as well as providing enjoyment and amusement to others. This project was especially gratifying for us, knowing that we were creating a piece of art that would help bring ease to people who were suffering in the wake of extreme traumas. To be selected out of a field of many worthy artists was in itself an honor. To help ease a troubled mind is an even greater gift.
