Overview

Suspension is an exploration of the relation between laser and water. Curious about the combination of two natural forces : concentrated light and water; we set out to find out what would happen if we were to give a consciousness to both matters. Two water basins and a wall made black plexiglass are placed on the ground in front of a tower with a laser on top shooting concentrated light which is then reflected back on the wall because of the water. The installation captivates the public and awakens their curiosity. It can either be displayed inside or outside.

Goals

Suspension is a new exploration from Ottomata of the relation between laser and water. Curious about the combination of two natural forces : concentrated light and water; we set out to find out what would happen if we were to give a consciousness to both matters. The result is a meditative experiment that should bring you back in the present moment.

Process

We always had a passion for mysterious project that awaken our audience’s curiosity and this is what we set out to explore in this piece. We created indoor water pool to start exploring laser reflection and refraction very early in the process. We had always imagined a kind of conscience in the laser beam and so we wanted the sound to react very tightly with the light. This pushed us to choose to design a musical system that the laser can play by itself, kind of like a musical instrument, instead of using a traditional soundtrack. This let us create an ever-changing piece, we programmed a set of rules for the Laser of what it could do and let it play its own soundtrack.
