Overview
What does a door mean to you? Does it evoke feelings of opportunity or anxiety? How did a door become such a metaphor for success, failure, opportunity, family, home, change, transition, and so many other moments of emotional connection? After all, it’s just a door.
“The Door” is a one-of-a-kind, custom, prototype gateway to the known…or better described as an augmented, known reality. Picture a standard front door – white, with a small window at the top and a brushed aluminum handle. Now, picture this door in the middle of a busy road, walkway or park. If you open this door, you’re sure to know what’s on the other side. However, when you open THIS door you will discover an augmented version of the other side, and each time you close and reopen the door a different experience awaits, utilizing cameras and custom animation to create an augmented reality. The technology allows users to interact with the experience in real-time, individually or in groups.
Goals
From custom 3d animation to abstract film, each contributing clip was carefully curated to evoke emotion. A custom soundtrack creates an acoustic beacon attracting willing participants. The goals was simple - create a little more extra in your ordinary day.
Process
All Big Art projects are designed, built and presented in a collaborative process. Each contributor brings a specialized skillset that requires years of academic and practical training. Many of these collaborators do not identify as artists professionally. instead, they are professionals in their field willing to participate in creating something extraordinary.
