Overview
In 2018 Public Art Services began working with Continuum Partners to develop a vision for the art programming for their redevelopment project at 9th Ave & Colorado Blvd in Denver, CO. This redevelopment project reintegrates the former 26-acre University of Colorado School of Medicine campus into the surrounding neighborhood fabric by blending apartments and townhomes with retail, offices and new public green spaces.
For Block 7 Denver based painter Kevin Sloan was commissioned to create an original composition for the facade of the parking structure adjacent to the Theo Apartments on an exterior wall that angles towards north bound traffic on Colorado Blvd. The mural entitled ‘The Mischief Makers’ was completed in February of 2019 by father and son muralist team Chris and Will Krieg who enlarged Kevin Sloan’s original painting to a massive 65’ x 65’ mural. Sloan’s work explores the relationship between the natural and human-made world. His paintings, often symbolic, deal with recurring paired themes such as fragility and strength, wonder and sorrow, and loss and resiliency.
Goals
The goal for this project was to update the facade of an older parking structure within this new development project. The angled wall is visible to both pedestrian traffic as well as passing vehicles on Colorado Blvd. Sloan succeeded in creating a compelling composition that adds visual interest to the parking structure and has captured the hearts of local residents. The original painting is on display in the lobby of the adjacent Theo Apartments.
Process
In 2018 artist Kevin Sloan was selected for the commission. Sloan then created an original painting that was enlarged and translated into a hand painted mural. The mural was completed by father and son muralist team Chris and Will Krieg in February of 2019. Public Art Services provided the following services: Design coordination, Materials research, Budget management, Fabrication oversight, Scheduling, and Project close-out.
